Years ago, I was living in a rough part of Brooklyn, NY and went into a local appliance store, dressed in my grubbiest clothes. I was hoping to get a discount, and pleaded with saleswoman, telling her I was poor. She responded, "you don't look poor." When I recounted this tale to a friend, he said I revealed my class when I opened my mouth, i.e. subtle things like diction are used as indicators of privilege just as much, or more than the way we dress.
