Interesting comment. For me, the comparison was used to convey the inevitability of death, not the loss of something once great. Unlike my father, with whom I shared a deep connection, I never felt a strong connection with the people or lands of Florida, though I appreciate that others do have that connection. Even in the best of (modern) times, Florida seemed to me unnatural and aberrant.
