I repeat a similar line about my area of expertise, housing. Housing has largely transitioned to a commodity, so perceived market value--not product value--is of foremost concern when deciding what to build. So McMansions--with their slapdash construction and cheap, large volumes to inflate perceived value--abound, while human-centered modest-sized apartments and homes--ones people can actually afford, use practically, and take care of-- go un-built.
